What you can take to Bulgaria from Moldova: cigarettes, alcohol, money, food

Bulgaria and Romania are EU countries, Moldova is not. So EU customs rules for passengers from third countries apply at entry. Checks are random, but if something excess is found, the whole van is held up.

Cigarettes and alcohol

Duty-free from Moldova into Romania, per adult: 40 cigarettes or an equivalent amount of other tobacco; 1 litre of spirits (over 22%) or 2 litres of drinks up to 22%; 4 litres of still wine; 16 litres of beer. Other purchases — up to 300 € per person.

Under 17s may not bring cigarettes or alcohol duty-free. Limits as published by the Moldovan Customs Service. Our advice: carry tobacco and alcohol for your own use only.

Cash

Amounts of 10,000 € or more per person must be declared. This rule applies across the EU.

Food

Meat and dairy products from outside the EU may not be brought in — they are confiscated at the border.

Exceptions: infant milk powder, baby food and special medical food — up to 2 kg per person, in the original packaging; gutted fish — up to 20 kg; honey and other animal products — up to 2 kg. Bread, biscuits, chocolate and pasta without meat are allowed. Details — EU rules published by Burgas Airport.

Medicines

Carry medicines for personal use in their original packaging and, if they are prescription drugs, with a prescription or a doctor's note.

What this means in our van

Each passenger is responsible for their own luggage. If excess goods are found on one person, all eight wait. That's why the driver may refuse a bag whose contents raise doubts.
